Don’t think 944’s have fires? We know of a widow and some fatherless kids who would disagree. I can get pictures of the car if necessary. Also I could post pictures of a melted down helmet and face shield as well as some burn scars that one of the SE guys has from rescuing a 944 driver at a NASA race. This was a not-all- that- violent rear end impact. I think the video of this fire is on u-tube, it makes a great recruiting tool for other spec classes. Could you cheat by adding weight to the foam? Sure, you can cheat on all of our rules but we still have rules. I suspect that a container could be put in the well, the foam could be poured and we would have a removable insert that could be checked for weight. If you don’t want the protection, that’s fine. The proposal was to make it an option. As is, we are actually racing cars that would not pass the federal safety standards that have been in place since the Ford Pinto disaster.

9 Transmission cooler: This was shot down last year, but transmissions are the weak point of our cars. I have broken too many. I want to add reliability and a cooler seems to be the way to go. I can't with the current rules.

Thanks,

Trans coolers are legal. nasa-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/document/do...ec_v12-Dec-31-13.pdf

Thanks Ken. I was told they weren't. Guess I should have read them myself.

Must have been something different that was proposed and not approved.

A word on bumper shocks. If you gut the shock and then weld it, it will
be less weight than a stock shock welded. That weight, maybe a few lbs, is
at the end of the cars. Currently I'm not for or against welding, still thinking about it. But if a rule is made it should be that the shock not be gutted. This way people who don't want to weld them up do not suffer a weight penalty because they wanted to leave it stock.

Thinking out loud....
Would there be any aero advantage to welding them in the crushed position?

If welded in the crushed position the bumper weight will be closer to the body. Does that give advantage? Do people running in the crushed position already have an advantage because the weight is closer to the body?

Is it safer to weld them? Does it help in an accident?
