Yeah but not all my parts are 30 years old. Would I feel safer on wheels that weren't 30 years old? Absolutely. Do I care enough to to have a spirited argument about it? Definitely. Will it keep me from racing if they don't allow me to run a new wheel set? Not a chance.
Seems odd though. If we can find an optional wheel set that weighs the same as the stock set then there is 0 performance advantage. Then the racer has the option. If your happy running what you have then do it if not and want the safest equipment then you can. Out of all the proposed rule changes this one makes the least sense to me to not let through. It's simple if you don't want to spend the money there will be no advantage so there would be no reason to feel that you had to. I'm honestly ok since I run newer phone dials but at some point I'll use these beyond the point that I feel is safe and want to replace them. To me wheels are consumables much like brakes.
