There is no way to truly level the playing field because the driver is the biggest variable to the cars performance. You can put the fastest guy in any mid pack car and he will still be at the front. The same goes for the reverse...

True, the Regional Season Champ order stayed kinda the same, but there was MUCH closer racing throughout the year. Look at these lap times...

Charlie, I'll do my best. I was not at Miller, and did not see every dyno there, so those years are less clear.

2007 - 137, 135 (few dynos done)
2008 - 139 (first "pro-built" motor), 137 (still few dynos, second pro built motor blew up before tested)
2009, 2010 (Miller) 143, 139 (may be others)
2011 - 139, 138, 135
2012 - 141, 140.5, 136

With Nationals back at Miller, we expect a bigger turnout, and a bigger number of highly tuned cars for 2013.

This only represent cars that showed up at Nationals, not all the dynos we see and evaluate.

What question do have on the formula?
At the suggestion of John Brown, I changed how it was typed to be more mathematically correct, but it should be clear.

What was the torque on those numbers? Would any have been DQ'd by the formula?

Guys I was at Nats the last 2 years. This year I dyno'd 133 (finished third), with the top 2 cars dynoing 140+. The gap between the leaders and I was about 20 seconds at the end. Let me tell you- even driving at my very best there's nothing I could do to keep up w the higher hp cars. Its also important to note that the finishing order was according to hp. I can tell you at smaller more technical tracks, this hp gap is less prevalent, and less costly. But at tracks with long straights on elevation, the difference is HUGE. I know that driver skill is the single biggest factor for any race- but as Sterling stated before, when there's 2 great drivers, and one of them has 7 hp more than the other, that's a huge advantage. Am I saying that if I had 7 hp more I'd have won nats? No. Eric and Palmer surely would have out driven me. But would the gap be 20+ seconds? Doubtful.
Again my car is now going to be affected by the dyno cap. As after its hour long tuning session I was able to make up 5-6 hp, now at 140.5 hp. But I want to win on driver skill, not hp. And I want the mid-pack and back pack guys to be closer to the action.

I support this initiative simply because it will do a better job of taking the incentive and perception that you require a pro-built motor with 88 pistons. It will help ensure that people aren't spending lots of money and time acquiring parts that were made for only one model year and are getting harder and harder to find. It will keep the incentive of running a thinner oil (and thus more risk of popping a motor) or purchasing multiples of ECU's, MAF's and FPR's to try to find the ones that make more power.

It brings the incentive to go back and improve driving through instruction and testing. There is no way to bring "parity" through racing, but this will help the perception of what is needed to run at the front or in the pack for our racing.
