I had two upper radiator hoses rub and cause a leak. I thought I zip tied them properly out of the way but also found out that I had the later 6 blade fans in my car in the early enclosure which allowed them to stick out several millimeters and slowly cut the hose.

Late Freyday (pun intended) night I decided to dig the hood out and get started on it. I removed the washer fluid hoses and wires. The insulation turned to dust when touched, so I got the old vacuum out.

It took less than 5 minutes to get rid of that. No dust, No mess!! You could just leave the hood as is but the residual glue is still very sticky and I don't want the hood full of dirt.

I pored some Acetone on and with a big scrapper, scraped most of the backing and glue off. The Acetone dissolved most of it right away. This took a bit longer, about 15 minutes. It wasn't too messy as the glue clumped together and using the scraper, I picked it up and put it in a old bucket.

I got out some coarse steel wool and cut /tore it in half. I got an old bowl, pored some Acetone in, dunked the steel wool in and started rubbing, turning the steel wool and adding Acetone as needed. When the steel wool was full of glue, I squeezed out the Acetone and got a fresh piece. I did a section at a time, wiping as I went. A few stubborn spots took a second time to get all the glue up. This took about 25 minutes, 45 to get to this point.

A 100psi air hose to get in all the corners and cracks and a final wipe with Acetone before paint. A coat of black hammer finish paint took care of the rest.

Check for fit and remove tape. Install the top piece.

Thanks, I still have to figure out how to mount one for the hatch.


One important thing that is missing with hood pins is that the hood does not "pop" open like it used to with the factory hardware.

I found the factory hardware and removed the spring. In the hood there's already a captured nut inside at the front so no need to do any work there. Just 1 bolt, 2 washers and 2 nuts will do.

Now when the latch is released, the hood "pops" open to get your fingers in to raise it. This will work on any car with hood pins.

I also got tired of holding the hood open with a stick and this weights less than the stock hood shocks. I had an aluminum rod lying around and decided to put it to good use.

I drilled a hole in the passenger side inner fender, measured and marked for the Z bend and bent the rod in my vice. A piece of 3/8 hose is used to hold the rod snugly up against the Z bend and inner fender.
