TOPIC: modify torsion bar - weld on tab or tap and die?

modify torsion bar - weld on tab or tap and die? 15 years, 4 months ago #4851

If, when, I ever get my torsion bars. I want to modify them for easy removal. I've already drilled the holes in the bodywork.

So, is it preferred to weld a tab onto the bar or to tap it so that a bolt can be used?

Any concerns with weakening with either method?

Tapping would be easier for me as I don't weld.

the spring steel is hard to tap (strong stuff) so I have them weleded at DART Auto.

Side note, make sure you note the R & L marks elsewhere before welding tabs. The welds can obscure that important info ! Don't ask how I know

A little more info ... the R and L only matters if you remove and replace them. once you load them L then it needs to stay a L . so I was told.
