While I have no experience with turbos, the NA 944's are easy to clean up. The wiring that goes across to/from the 12 pin connector can all be handled inside the car and eliminate the wiring across the rear of the engine bay.
I removed all of the fuse block stuff, on the left side, and dumped all of the wires to the 12 pin connector. I put breakers inside the car and fed them from the battery cutoff switch. All in all, I dumped 40 pounds of wiring, fuses, etc with this approach. I did keep the actual engine harness part of the wiring. I did pull some wires back from the 12 pin connector and rerouted them back down the engine harness and into the car through the rubber case. Once inside the car, I wired them as needed for their function.
