TOPIC: 944 Questions??

944 Questions?? 13 years, 8 months ago #9587

I have been thinking for awhile and been doing research about road racing. My original plan was to race Open wheel Formula v's, but found out that there really isnt alot of compition in that class. I stumbled apon this class and it looks like a lot of fun. Some questions i have are do you have to have a license to race this class in nasa and scca? If so, i would probably have to go to a racing school. Which is recomended in socal? Is there usually some good compition in this class? I'm probably forgetting some questions so if you any other input, fire away.

You do need a comp license to race in NASA or SCCA. SCCA does not have the 944 class outside of Arizona, but NASA does and it strong in So-Cal.

NASA also has a Driver Ed program that will help you move from notice to racer. You spend time on same track as the racers, but there is limited passing that gradually moves torward open passing in more skilled run groups. How long it take depends skill level and when the next competition school is. Most races myself included ran a number of DE events before having the skills to get a comp license and race effectivly. To start you can bring street car or bring a race car and start entering events.

here are the web sites for SCCA in Cal. You can do a two day super school and get a racing license for SCCA. This does require an SCCA legal racecar, drivers and saftey gear.

With this license you can apply for a NASA Comp license and will have to prove your ability in a DE setting. You may get passed the first time or it may take a few events to get approved. This is usually the fastest way to go racing.

The NASA method does take longer. But you can do most of it with a street car.
So there are benefits to either system.

At NASA you will have the support of the 944 group if that is the class you are looking to get into. You can start with a street legal 944 or buy a race ready car. It is cheaper to buy a racecar in the long run. The racecar can be street legal so you could drive it to the track.

Do you have any track experience?

The feeder school for NASA is Driving Concepts.

Go to www.drivingconcepts.com to check their schedule. Great 2 day race school.

They also have an HPDE at Willowsprings on March 3rd, if memory serves me right.
